Celebrate the Millennium with Riedel Commemorative Glass
Riedel has just introduced in the U.S. the first six limited-edition commemorative
crystal Millennium Champagne glasses, called Jahrtausendglas (thousand years glass) in their native tongue. The
first Millennium glass, the 1998, was introduced this fall at Frankfurt's Ambiente Show and will retail in the
U.S. for $29.50. Because it incorporates 1998 crystal on its stem, it is expected that in addition to early millennium
celebrations it will also be used as the perfect gift for dated celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries
and bar-mitzvahs. The 1998 Millennium glass comes packed in its own elegant, black cylindrical gift box. An entirely
new and different Millennium glass will be introduced in each of the next five years, in 1999, 2000, 2001, and
2003. All will be of fine machine-made lead crystal but each will be of a different size, design and expression,
and each will carry its own vintage year as a prominent element, as well as being packed in its own gift box. To
achieve their special and unique ornamentation, individual high-tech steel molds will be created for the bowls
and stems of each year's glass.
Because each mold will be destroyed on March 31 of the year following its production,
it is possible that the Millennium glasses will become collectors' items. According to Georg Reidel, master glass
craftsman and president of the firm, "All mankind will focus on its past and on its future as our generation
bears witness to the emotional year beginning with the final hours of the 20th century when it ends on January
31, 1999 and the launching of the third Millennium on January 1, 2001. If ever there were a special time to celebrate,
it will be this time between our past and our future. Riedel's Jahrtausendglasses were designed to celebrate these
moments." Riedel Crystal is known for designing the most finely tuned instruments for every level of wine
sophistication as well as the finest wine glasses in all price categories. Its glasses, including the Sommeliers,
Vinum, Ouverture, and Basic series, are available at fine wine merchants and specialty shops as well as from wine
specialty mail-order catalogues including IWA 800-527-4072, Wine Enthusiast 800-356-8466, and Brown Derby 417-883-4066
