Canadian Cold War: Iceberg Vodka Lands $7m LOI from Russia
Gary Pollack is on a mission that's about as tough as selling ice to the
Inuit--or in his case, icebergs.
The president of Canadian Iceberg Vodka Corporation participated in the
Team Canada 2002 mission, looking to secure new distribution channels
for his award-winning ICEBERG Vodka.
The first stop was Russia--recognized the world over for its vodka. But
that didn't phase Pollack. "There are other imported vodkas being brought into Russia and there is no reason why ICEBERG Vodka shouldn't
be there as well," he said. Pollack knows he ranks among the best, having won medals at four competitions to date.
Pollack ended up signing a letter of intent in Moscow, reportedly valued
at $7 million, with an unidentified Russian firm to promote the sale of
ICEBERG Vodka in Russia. He also went to Berlin and Munich with Team
Canada to finalize details for a German distributorship for ICEBERG Vodka. Pollack is a repeat participant, having signed a distribution
deal in Hong Kong during the Team Canada 2001 mission, which has also
helped open doors to negotiations in mainland China.
ICEBERG Vodka's two primary ingredients are Canadian sweet corn and
literally good old water-- from 12,000-year-old water harvested from
icebergs floating off the coast of Newfoundland. "We have lots of people
harvesting ice and we've started a new industry in Newfoundland," Pollack tells HappyHours.com. "Iceberg harvesting uses the same people,
boats and equipment as the fishing industry." Last year, about 500 tons
of icebergs were harvested for use in ICEBERG Vodka.
