Wild Turkey Restaurant & Bar
This place is calling your name for lunch. It's the call of the wild. The Wild
Turkey, that is. A Dallas institution on the periphery of the original "Restaurant Row". When I first
started stopping by The Turkey 20 years ago, they had stiff drinks and strong sandwiches. Fast-forward two decades
and that's still true, but the menu has expanded considerably. I always went for the eponymous "Wild Turkey"
($4.65), a double-decker sandwich made with smoked turkey breast on whole-grain toast with a side of slaw; very
tasty. They've got a Deluxe model for only 90 cents more that comes with tomato, bacon and cheese. This sandwich
is some serious munching. Daily lunch specials, Monday through Friday, are taken from their list of home cookin'
specialties, like pot roast ($5.95) and chicken fried steak ($6.15) served with vegetables, corn bread and garlic
rolls. Wednesday is All-You-Can-Eat catfish day. All you handle with red beans & rice and hush puppies for
$9.75, or $7.25 for the single serving, girth watching size. A half-a-dozen, big ol' half-pound burgers are served,
from $3.99 to $5.29, just pick your topping. Soups and salads are good. Grab some chili ($3.95) or gumbo ($3.95/$2.75)
served with lots of hush puppies or corn bread. When is the last time you saw a grilled chicken Caesar for $5.95?
You'll find it here and it's good. They've got beef and chicken fajitas ($8.25), nicely done chicken or shrimp
quesadillas ($5.45) and even a 12 ounce Ribeye ($12.95) if you're really hungry! The prices are good, and even
though it's a bar, the food's not run-of-the-mill bar food. It's crowded during the lunch rush, but tables turn
pretty quickly. You might want to try some seafood appetizers at the bar while you wait. Fresh oysters on ice (Baker's
dozen $6.95 or 6 for $3.95) or peel and eat Gulf shrimp (served by weight) are two of the offerings. If the weather's
nice pick a patio table.
