Tillman's Corner

By Jim White

Whether you conduct business in Armani or Levi’s let me take you to the corner of the world where I grew up for some tasty New American Cuisine.

Welcome to Tillman's Corner near the Kidd Springs and Winnetka Heights Historic Districts.

You’d expect, perhaps, a casual restaurant in laid back Oak Cliff, but you might not expect top flight cooking in the bargain. Suffice to say, when I first discovered this great little restaurant a few years ago I was amazed to find such good food in the ‘hood.

I’ve enjoyed dinners here, I just hadn’t made it over for lunch. Don’t make the same mistake.

Appetizers are outstanding. Careful, or you’ll never make it to entrées! Try spring rolls with spicy peanut sauce ($4.75), blackened chicken tenders with honey mustard ($5.50) or baby back ribs ($6.25), also available as a full order ($11.95).

I can recommend the Double Caesar with those chicken tenders, too ($8.25).

Great sandwiches include an eat every bite Catfish Po-Boy ($6.95) and a down home burger with all the trimmings ($6.25).

There’s a good pasta selection. I liked the smoked chicken with tri-color pasta and sun-dried tomatoes ($8.50).

If you’re really hungry, try the 10 oz. pork chop with baked potato and steamed veggies ($12.95).

Cedar plank salmon with Burgundy wine sauce and horseradish mash potatoes is a great seafood choice.

Desserts are divine if you have room. Especially the delicate key-lime pie ($4.50)-it’s the real McCoy, and an unusual crème brûlée ($5.25) filled with wild berries and topped with a berry sauce.

Tillman's Corner has an extensive wine list and full service bar, available with a nominal club membership.

It's big and airy with high ceilings, funky artwork and friendly service.

A note of tribute: we’re delighted that Sarah Tillman kept her husband Ricky’s labor of love open after he passed away.

It's definitely worth finding this corner of the world, for dressed-up food without having to get dressed-up!
