Tei Tei Robata Bar
By Jim White

Sushi fans and non-Sushi fans alike will find something to enjoy at a hot, new restaurant on Henderson, just off Central Expressway in East Dallas. Tei Tei Robata Bar, is the sleek, new contemporary restaurant from the owners of Teppo on Greenville Avenue. It’s not sushi, although you’ll find some of the best sashimi around at Tei Tei Robata Bar.

Perhaps the best way to describe this restaurant is to explain what the words mean. Tei Tei literally means little castle….as in Chef Teiichi Sakurai’s little castle.

Robata is a traditional Northern Japanese form of cooking over a grill that has been refined and enhanced in Tokyo. The food is served over the bar…. usually on a long-handled wooden palate, after the items come fresh from the grill. Thus, Tei Tei Robata Bar.

They serve a wonderful miso soup and a delightful pumpkin potage-a creamy, chilled Japanese soup.
Don’t miss the flounder, smoked salmon or yellow tail sashimi-which come 5 pieces to the order.

Match that with treasures from the grill like marinated sea bass, shitake mushroom, Maine lobster or grilled oyster on the half-shell. For the delicacy of delicacies sample the Kobe Beef-considered the finest in the world. You may have heard stories about Tei Tei’s $100.00 steak. And yes, a 10 ounce cut of the famed, fork tender, melt in your mouth meat, named for the Japanese city where the cattle are raised, will set you back $100.00, or so give or take the exact weight of the cut. But keep in mind this is an item to be shared and savored among several people along with the other tempting treats from the menu.

And, for much less than $100.00, individual Kobe preparations are available, including sashimi and a very tasty grilled Kobe with potato.

Kisu fish Tempura and soft-shell crab tempura should also be kept in mind from the specialties list. There are so many interesting choices: sizzling seafood, sweet glazed duck, crispy squid cake, scallops gratin, and a remarkable foie gras with sesame and soy. Add one of the rice bowls, rice ball or sticky rice dishes from Tei Tei Robata and you’ve got a delectable meal.

Some wines are offered by the glass, but here I recommend you do as the Kobe beef do and enjoy the Sake or Japanese Beer with your meal.

Desserts include tantalizing and refreshing chilled watermelon soup with chilled granita, and Sake ice cream.

Tei Tei Robata Bar is open for dinner only, Tuesday through Sunday. Call 214-828-2400 for reservations. The restaurant is located at 2906 N. Henderson in East Dallas. Now that the Knox/Henderson exit from Central Expressway is manageable again, it’s worth venturing this way from most any point in The Metroplex. There are plenty of good Sushi Bars---there’s only one Robata Bar-Tei Tei’s!
