Sevy's Grill

Chef Jim Severson is well known on the Metroplex restaurant scene. If you’re lucky you had his food at Dakota’s, where friends came to know his as Sevy. These days, Jimmy is hangin’ out at Sevy’s, and the rest will be history.

Sevy’s is at the southern edge of Preston Center in Dallas. After a rather splashy opening, the place continues to hum with business. It helps to have to a network of food and wine lovers as investors. It also helps to have one of the finest chefs around.

The restaurant looks great, too. Paul Draper is in good form with the bold, clean lines of Sevy’s. From the rock sculpture along the back wall, to the hypnotic amber light cast from behind the bar at Sevy’s, this place is so smooth and smart, you want to overlook the acoustics. And the noise level is the only complaint I have about Sevy’s. Even with the recent “fix” you may have read about, the place is still a bit high on the decibel scale, if quiet dinner conversation is on your mind.

The surroundings and the food soon make you forget about the din. The smart New American Menu is outstanding from the beginning to the end. We’ve tried all the appetizers and they only go from good to better. For a taste treat be sure to try Sevy’s Wood-fired tasting sampler. The wonderful smoky flavor in all the grilled favorites from Sevy’s kitchen will make your taste buds smile. On the plate, barbecue shrimp, smoked venison sausage and grilled pheasant sausage served with Sevy’s own mustard sauce and pickled vegetables. The calamari rings are crispy and tender; some of the best I’ve had. The grilled portabella is marinated in red wine and roasted garlic-oh, yeah! Now, pace yourself, the soups and salads lie ahead. I recommend Sevy’s chop salad or the fresh spinach and blue cheese. Fresh soup? Do inquire if it’s Lobster Bisque night at Sevy’s; although you’ll probably be able to tell from the crowded parking lot. This bisque is heavenly.

There is pasta with roasted vegetables. Angel hair with fresh Maine lobster and a pasta of the day. Do not pass up something from Sevy’s acclaimed grill during your visit. Chicken, tenderloin, New York Strip, or a delightfully flavorful Red Chile Spiced Salmon Fillet served with a crab and avocado tostada.

Specialties include rotisserie duck and a meal fit for a king, the stuffed pork rib chop. One of the shining stars on the menu is the skillet roasted grouper in a lemon thyme sauce. As we like to say here, it is to live for!

For dessert, depending on how much room you have left, the Three Citrus Pie in a just-right graham cracker crust or the Dark Chocolate Spike Cake will finish the meal nicely. The Vanilla Bean Cheesecake with a macadamia nut crust and dark chocolate sauce is truly decadent.

The mostly American wine list is part of the menu and you’ll find a nice selection of wines by the glass. Sevy’s is at 8201 Preston. Phone 214-265-7389 for reservations. That’s 265-SEVY.
