Rough Creek Lodge
By Jim White
Lets take the Business Lunch or dinner outside the box-in fact outside the Metroplex,
to a rustic setting near Glen Rose.
Rough Creek Lodge Executive Retreat and Resort offers Five-Fork dining, luxurious
accommodations, ample meeting facilities and a serene setting about 90 miles southwest of Dallas.
Now this is my idea of roughing it!
Rough Creek Lodge should be at the top of the list if youre planning a company retreat,
looking for a unique training location or want to drop some cool perks on the movers and shakers in your organization.
This would make a dramatic setting for a presentation and world-class luncheon.
Get the client on a late-afternoon flight and be home for dinner.
Or, you could spend a few relaxing workdays here as two large companies did during
our visit.
Also, consider this beautiful setting for a romantic getaway. Nothing like a lazy
lunch, a refreshing swim and visit to the spa, followed by a delightful massage; perhaps a luxurious nap and then
a candlelight dinner in the magnificent Grand Hall setting of Rough Creek Lodge. Or, that secluded table for
two on the patio or near the lake. Or, stay in the room and call for room service 24 hours a day.
But my job is to tell you about the food. Executive Chef Gerard Thompson and his
team are turning out some of the most consistently excellent cuisine Ive ever tasted-for breakfast, lunch and
dinner!
Chef Thompson is used to catering to high rollers. He ran the kitchen at Santa Barbaras
famous San Ysidro Ranch-retreat for the stars.
His menu changes daily. The choices are delectable. The price for the quality is
very reasonable. Enjoy three courses-including coffee or tea-for $24.95 or order à la carte. I highly
recommend the former. In the evening, the prix fixe is $55 per person for three courses. There is an excellent
wine list to accompany your selections.
Fresh baked breads, using the Artisan method, and scrumptious desserts make the dining
experience shine even more.
Some highlights of the menu include chili corn pancakes with lump crab, blue prawn
and cilantro sauce; all of the salads (Caesar is fabulous) and a delicious, piquant tortilla soup with avocado.
Superb entrées range from a stunning basil crusted flounder with caramelized
onion mashed potatoes to the wildly popular burger with smoked bacon, white Vermont Cheddar and hand-cut fries.
A divine herb roasted chicken breast with shiitake mushrooms and baby spinach and grilled monkfish with herb couscous
and honey sesame vinaigrette are two other standouts.
I wish this restaurant were in Dallas or Fort Worth. Ill be filling up the gas tank
and making the roundtrip for lunch again soon.
