Rodolfo’s Italian Restaurant

By Jim White

Rodolfo’s Italian Restaurant is tried and true. It’s a neighborhood favorite open most anytime you’re hungry.

And, if you’re looking for heart healthy dining you’ll find it here. Rodolfo’s founded the concept of lighter Italian cuisine. Most of their dishes meet American Heart Association Dietary Guidelines for reduced fat, cholesterol and calories.

There’s still plenty of flavor though. It’s all in the preparation. Cut the butter, cream and salt; substitute white wine, broths, herbs and spices; bake or grill the dishes and you can do tasty Italian, Ital-Lite.

You’ll know the items that qualify, because they’re clearly marked on the menu-with all the stats.

If the thought of healthy dining makes you want to run in the other direction. Don’t worry. You’ll find plenty unhealthy foods on the menu to satisfy your taste.

Fried calamari ($5.95), Meatballs or sausages in fresh tomato sauce ($4.95) are a couple of good choices in the appetizer department.

There’s pizza with all the toppings ($6.95 for a 9 inch, $9.95 for a 14 inch, plus toppings) good ol’ lasagna ($6.95), and a nice veal chop ($15.95).

Ah, but the snapper ($10.95) beckons, with your choice of sauces-maybe a zesty piccata.

Or maybe the rainbow trout ($10.95) sauteed in margarine with white wine and parsley.

Then, too, the Lite-Pasta calls out to you. Try Capri ($7.95) with artichoke, spinach, mushrooms, and sun dried tomatoes. Delish! You have a choice of angel hair, linguine, fettuccine, penne or tortellini. Add shrimp, salmon or chicken to any dish for $3.95.

Lots of good light choices, and some not so light if you’re still determined to have a meatball fix.

Packing a big appetite? Try the sampler plate ($10.95) with scampi, stuffed mushrooms, spinach balls, sausage and meatballs-with pasta and no printed calorie count.

The eatery packs ‘em in for lunch and dinner; plenty of Lite plates among the regulars. Do you think they’ve discovered that fewer calories leaves room for one of the special desserts imported from Italy? Hmm. Did somebody say healthy?
