Renaissance Garden Café

By Jim White

Most of us lead a fast and furious lifestyle. In this age of stressful workplace, scheduling pressures and road rage, there’s not much opportunity to slow things to a more civilized pace.

We certainly don’t find much relief at lunch, where a frenetic atmosphere usually prevails. Most establishments face an economic fact of life that calls for turning tables repeatedly to turn a profit.

There is an option for those seeking a more relaxed setting: Renaissance Garden Café.

This charming little oasis is nestled amongst the elegant surroundings of Inessa Stewart’s Antiques.

Dine indoors among the beautiful antiques or in the garden surrounded by classically styled statuary.

A refined luncheon menu is offered and afternoon tea seatings are available from 2 until 4. The café is open from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Artichoke chrysanthemums ($7.50)—artichokes hearts filled with herbs, sun-dried tomatoes, cheese and a lemon tarragon sauce—and a nicely prepared Coquilles de St. Jacques ($8.95), are two good starter choices.

Interesting salads abound. Tuscan Renaissance is a nice change of pace from a Caesar, with crispy baby romaine, kalamata olives, freshly made croutons and shaved Romano ($6.50). The Orchard Salade Poulet ($9.75) features field greens topped with herb roasted chicken, apples, walnuts, bleu cheese and a delightful raspberry vinaigrette.

From the sandwich offerings, I thoroughly enjoyed the roasted turkey, layered with peppered bacon and melted mozzarella ($8.75). A nice light lunch option features your choice of a half sandwich and a cup of the soup du jour ($8.95).

Entrées ranges from garden crépes du jour ($11.50) to veal champignons ($15.95), and include daily specials.

Stylish desserts feature delicacies from their in-house bakery. Keep the stress level low and choose the Garden Café sampler ($6.50).

Service is accommodating. Reservations are highly recommended.

I was the only man in the dining room. I suspect that’s the norm, but I think more men should be encouraged to relax and enjoy this sophisticated lunch opportunity. Of course, if you want to keep it to yourself, ladies, it can be our little secret.
