Rasoi Indian Restaurant

By Jim White

Always vigilant for good curry, and a bargain, we take you to the heart of the Telecom Corridor for today’s find.

I am pleased to report Rasoi Indian Restaurant, featuring specialties of Southern India, rates high on both accounts.

The restaurant, open since early July, has found a following with the high-tech types in the neighborhood.

Good thing they serve a marvelous lunch buffet (seven days a week), so there’s almost no waiting.

More good news: the price is only $6.95 weekdays (11-2) and $7.95 weekends. They serve a good range of dishes and keep the buffet well tended. Let’s go down the line.

Two wonderful soups were offered: Madras-delicate, yet spicy tomato with coconut and Mulligatawny-chicken, lentils and vegetables (or “the one made famous on Seinfeld by the Soup Nazi” as it’s billed here). Both were extremely flavorful.

Crispy papadum and fluffy naan breads are plentiful. An array of mouthwatering entrée items included chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori chicken-marinated overnight and very tender, and spicy beef and bell pepper with curry.

Side items may be more delicious than the ones featuring meat and chicken-something to keep in mind if you want a vegetarian version of the buffet. The Saag Paneer (panir)-spinach and cheese-is one of the more flavorful I’ve tried. Also delicious: Dal Makhani-assorted lentils-and Aloo Muttor-peas and potatoes.

An assortment of desserts includes cream of wheat pudding (Sooji Halwa), vermicelli pudding (Samiya Kheer) and mango fruit pudding.

Sometimes our motto is “anything worth doing is worth overdoing”, so we also tried a delightful chef’s recommendation: chicken Firyani-chicken in basmati rice with spices, herbs, dried fruit and nuts ($10.95), along with hot and yummy garlic naan ($1.75). And, since you can’t have enough dessert, we also sampled Kheer Badami, rice pudding topped with chopped pistachio nuts and cardamon- intoxicating ($2.95).

Service is friendly and efficient. I want to start a business in the area so I can come in more often.
