Picardy's Shrimp Shop
By Jim White
Quick, casual and convenient, that's Picardy's Shrimp Shop in Snider Plaza.
Folks took to this spot in a hurry when it opened about 3 years ago.
Shrimp all kinds of ways, fresh seafood and other specialties make this a hot spot
for SMU students and Park Cities professionals alike.
Matt Martinez III joined the culinary team here about a year ago to revamp the menu.
It's simple, enjoyable food with a healthy dose of "Nawlins" jazz on the sound system.
Get Picardy's regular menu anytime which includes a range of boiled, fried and grilled
seafood selections, plus items for the non-seafood inclined (burger, fried chicken and steak).
Lunch combos are a real value. They're called Pics-as in Picardy's.
I had Pic #4, salad and a sandwich ($5.25) with a choice of house salad or a Caesar
and a half shrimp or oyster loaf sandwich. I was expecting a "Po-Boy", but got a very simple version
with breaded shrimp, a dash of tartar and catsup on a toasted bun. Pretty tasty.
Other "Pics" include crabcake and salad ($5.95); catch of the day and salad
($7.95); or salad and soup ($4.75).
Whether you have one of the lunch specials or not, you need to try the soup-preferably
the shrimp gumbo ($3.50 cup/$5.50 bowl). It's nice and peppery with just the right amount of okra.
I had a "crispy crabcake" appetizer that was certainly crispy but not very
crabby, i.e., more breadcrumbs than crab. It was a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale (one for $3.50, two for $6.75).
You can also get Gulf Oysters shucked to order (six for $4.50, twelve for $7.25).
Other sandwiches include blackened catfish ($6.75), grilled chicken ($6.95) and grilled
tuna ($4.50).
Shrimp specialties keep people coming back. Be sure to try the coconut tempura shrimp
($11.50) with a very tasty honey sour sauce, or the shrimp with cheddar grits ($12.75).
The hushpuppies are hot and tasty. The service is laid back. Ya'll come on down!
