Omega’s Tex-Mex Cafe

D
eep Ellum is a great spot for dining in Dallas - maybe the most interesting. And, in an area laden with good Tex-Mex, which of course Texas is, some of the good stuff is at Omega’s Tex-mex Café.

Omega’s is bustling now. Folks are flocking. Hey, this is good. Deep Ellum is the Soho of Dallas. It’s getting better all the time. New places. New faces. But you may have two problems if you go to Omega’s: parking, unless you don’t mind paying a pretty penny, and service if the place is crowded-and these days, it usually is. I’m glad business is good, but it looks like they need more help.

We ordered appetizers and entrees at the same time early one busy Saturday night. We did this, ostensibly to save time, since the wait staff was strained because of a birthday party for 20 going on. Well, we didn’t save any time, and we almost didn’t eat. Not only did we sit there starving for 30 minutes, when our food finally showed up, it was the main course. The waitress turned in our appetizer order after the entree order. She wanted to bring the starters out after our entrees arrived. She didn’t seem to understand why we wouldn’t need an appetizer after we had dinner. Well, despite that little setback-the main course items were good.

The Fajita Salad is big. Or, you can get The Omega Salad with lots of veggies and shrimp. The enchiladas are big, well seasoned, and laden with Chili or Cheese or Sauce, depending on your selection. Flautas are good, but seem just a touch greasy. Tacos Al Carbon with Chicken or Beef Fajita, comes with all the trimmings and is a lighter way to enjoy Omega’s-if you leave off the cheese and sour cream, of course.

Not tried, but looking very popular is the Chimichanga. You can get it with Chicken Fajita or Brisket. The appetizer list is broad, but it’s pretty much the usual suspects. Even though they’re big, filling, freshly made and usually very tasty, As I mentioned at the top, we didn’t get to try any of them this particular night, because of the service snafu.

I would avoid the wine selections by the glass at Omega’s, unless you don’t care much about taste. And just say, “una mas cerveza, por favor”-or stick with the tea and water.

Omega’s Tex-Mex Café is in Deep Ellum. AT 212 N. Crowdus, near Main Street. The phone number is 214-744-6842. It’s one of those great spots to go after a pub crawl-or, as Jimmy Buffet calls it, “God’s own drunk”-since they’re open till 4 A.M. on Friday and Saturday. Don’t drive if you’ve been drinking!
