BD’s Mongolian Barbeque
By Jim White
Conquering warriors have descended
on Las Colinas. Hordes of local citizenry, throwing caution to the
wind, have cast their lot with this band of marauders from the North
Country.
Don’t phone Irving P.D. Take the
situation (and chop sticks) in hand and encounter this modern
Mongolian invasion yourself. Head for 114 and MacArthur, and
"enjoy all you can conquer" (these warriors have a
publicist) at BD’s Mongolian Barbeque.
It’s a create-your-own-stir-fry,
all-you-can-eat restaurant inspired by Mongolians’ ancient cooking
history. They didn’t take time to write sentences filled with
hyphenated phrases when they wanted to eat. They built a huge fire,
turned their massive warrior shields over, threw in whatever they
could pillage and cooked lunch on the spot.
Today, it’s a lot easier. No
plundering and no heavy iron shield to lug around. You supply the
appetite. BD’s supplies the fresh ingredients and the fire (a
600° grill shaped like a shield).
The concept is ingenious. Take a
bowl. Select meat or seafood. Add veggies to your heart’s content.
Ladle on different sauces and spices. Try as many variations as you
want. You are the master of your fate, the captain of your bowl.
All-you-can-eat lunch is $9.99,
including the well-stocked salad bar. Warriors with smaller
appetites may opt for the one-bowl campaign ($6.99) or combine one
bowl and salad ($8.99). Rice and tortillas are included.
"BD" is Billy Downs,
president and founder. He discovered Mongolian barbeque at a London
pub. Eventually, he brought the concept and its UK founder (COO
Matthew Kirby) to the States and opened the first BD’s in
Michigan. After a decade the group has launched 25 restaurants with
25 more planned by the end of next year, including a Plano location
this summer.
The place is fun and irreverence
permeates from the top-down. Mr. Downs is fond of donning the "Mongo
Man" costume, the chain’s mascot.
I wouldn’t plan a board meeting
here, but it’s a great spot for a quick, hearty and healthy lunch
(add some vegetables to that concoction), before heading back to the
business battlefield.
