Matt’s No Place

By Jim White

Run-do not walk-to Lakewood Shopping Center for a taste of heaven on Earth, cowboy style.

Matt Martinez, Jr. is smokin' meats and servin' 'em up himself at No Place.

I'll repeat that in case you dropped your Business Journal while heading for the door.

Matt's serving lunch at No Place! 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. Monday through Friday-or till they run out of meat. First few days they ran out between noon and 1.

Matt's been cooking more meat and that smoker's goin' 24 hours a day, but you never know. Keep runnin'!

Feast on fall-apart-tender brisket-best I've had-served sliced or chopped on dee-licious Huntington buns from La Spiga Bakery. Matt toasts 'em just right on the grill and then piles 'em high with meat-not a lick of fat. Smoky, spicy barbecue sauce ladled over it-umm-m-m!

You can also get outstanding chicken breast, pulled pork or good ol' Texas sausage.

A two-handed sandwich and your choice of two sides for just $5.95! Can this price last?

These are no ordinary sides either. They include, cole slaw that puts all the others you've tasted to shame-made with ranch dressing instead of mayo-potato salad just like Grand Ma's and smoky pinto Camp Beans.

Oh yeah, you can also get smoked chicken legs for 75 cents with any sandwich.

What could be better with this glorious campfire lunch than an icy cold IBC Root Beer, iced tea, or a cold Long Neck?

Frozen peanut butter pie ($1.75) was the dessert of the day. More treats, including cobbler, are planned.

They'll probably offer a meat sampler plate by the time you read this so you don't have to fret over missing out. Matt's working to get everything just right. Who knows what other treats he has planned?

Seems like every time he gets a minute he's got something new going on. Matt's at Macy's is set to open, and his new location at the Austin airport is going great guns. Keep runnin', Matt!

On The KRLD Restaurant Show Review Scale of One to Five Forks: No Place is a 3 and a half Fork Restaurant. That breaks down like this:

Food is 4 Forks.
Service is 3 Forks.
Atmosphere is 3 and a half Forks.
Price is moderately expensive, but salads and sides come with the entrees.
