Lawry’s The Prime Rib

By Jim White

The Lawry’s silver cart has been rolling by tables for years serving delicious prime rib to diners.

Now, for lunch, you can roll by the cart-so to speak-and get a selection of juicy sandwiches from their chef’s carving station setup in the bar area of the new tollway location.

The ale and sandwich bar lunch is served weekdays. Create your sandwich from the famous prime rib ($8.95), roast turkey ($7.95), corned beef ($6.95), ham ($5.95), barbecue beef ($5.95) or pastrami ($6.95).

Pick a break, like sourdough, whole grain, olive and more, then stroll to the condiment bar and select mustards, horseradish, pickles, peppers, onions and pasta salad.

After you seat yourself, the friendly server stops by to take care of your drink order to offer the signature banana cream pie for dessert.

Want some veggies or salad along with your lunch? You can choose from mashed potatoes, creamed spinach or corn ($1.95).

Maybe a salad is in order. Go for a big Caesar ($5.95) or a Cobb ($6.95). You can also get a homemade white navy bean soup by the bowl ($3) or the cup ($2). Or, the get the Caesar and a cuppa soup for $6.95.

If your appetite is howling for more, you can get a full cut of the prime rib ($21.95) or a lunch cut ($12.95).

This is usually a quick lunch-depending on what time you show up-and a great alternative to fast food.

Caveat emptor! If you arrive at noon and expect to sail through the line, think again. The inexpensive lunch has caught on. I conducted the better part of a business meeting while waiting in the sandwich line.

Having to spend 20 minutes in line to get a carved sandwich is neither pleasant nor efficient. Perhaps they need to rethink their serving arrangement during peak hours.

Of course, arriving earlier or later is another solution to the logjam.

All in all, it’s a good place for a lunch meeting-once you sit down-and the quick shot north on the Tollway even makes the restaurant convenient from Downtown.
