La Calle Doce
By Jim White

Olé! The Sanchez Family has expanded La Calle Doce north of the Trinity!

Their wonderful Mexican seafood and Tex-Mex restaurant in Oak Cliff attracts big crowds to the long established Twelfth Street location. Now those great dishes are available seven days a week in East Dallas.

I highly recommend you try it for your next business lunch. It's much brighter and airier than the former restaurant in this location, The Brick Room.

La Calle Doce is family operated, the service is friendly, the prices are reasonable, the food is good and they serve you lots of it. Need I say more? Well no, but of course I will.

I only have room for a few highlights from the menu, which is extensive and served all day long.

Tex-Mex Appetizers include great nachos-try the beef and chicken fajita combo (full order $8.95/half order $5.95).

A seafood appetizer platter is laden with ceviche-marinated fish and shrimp-fried catfish strips, shrimp, oysters, scallops, stuffed crab and frog legs ($14.95). Muy bueno!

Tortilla soup is "just right"-both for Goldilocks and me (bowl $3.95/cup $1.75).

Seafood cocktails are delightful. Morsels swimming in tasty cocktail sauce are served in goblets. Numerous combinations include scallops, oysters, octopus and shrimp ($5.95 small/$10.95 large).

Tampico style tenderloin ($10.95) is a fabulous meat dish. For a taste of several favorites try the special plate with beef and chicken fajitas, sausage, rice, beans and guacamole ($18.50/$22.50 with shrimp fajitas).
Seafood specials are not to be missed. Red snapper in garlic butter ($11.75), spicy and sweet shrimp ($11.25), fish or shrimp tacos with a light cucumber salad ($8.95) and the shrimp stuffed with crabmeat ($11.95) are standouts. All except the tacos come with a large baked potato.

Paella ($12.95) is served on the weekends. The popular Spanish dish is chock full of seafood, pork and chicken.

I haven't even gotten to the fried seafood, chicken or breakfast specials.

Looks like a number of trips are in order. It's a good thing they have two locations.
