Gilbert's New York Delicatessen


A good deli should always be in your lunch repertoire. I like to be aware of as many good ones as possible wherever I live or do business. You just never know when a nice corned beef on rye could close a business deal. Or when a bowl of chicken soup can cure what ails ya. In North Dallas you can't go wrong with Gilbert's New York Delicatessen in the Preston-Forest Shopping Center. Gilbert's is open every day but Monday for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Combination sandwiches are stacked a mile high. You can get The Brooklyn Bridge-a triple decker of corned beef, pastrami, chopped liver and onion ($9.50); The Lincoln Tunnel-turkey and chopped liver with onion ($9.25) or a number of other Manhattan landmarks. I'm likin' The Reuben for $8.95--get it with corned beef, pastrami or turkey-or the Kosher Dog for a buck ninety-five. Sandwiches are served with tasty Kosher Dills, Bagel Chips and a choice of cole slaw, pasta salad or potato salad (to live for). Of course, you can get the "half-mile" version of your favorite sandwich, too, for around $6.75. Specialties include Hungarian Beef Goulash ($10.25), Corned Beef and Cabbage ($11.25), or Brisket over Pancakes ($11.25). Salad Platters are varied and there's even a "Lite Menu" for those of us watching fat grams. Gilbert's has a lunch special that includes a half-sandwich, small bowl of soup or a salad and a beverage for $7.50. A hot, open-faced sandwich could also make your day for $9.75 (with a potato pancake). Burgers galore, cheesecake and more and the omelettes, eggs and waffles are served all day. Have I dined and gone to heaven? Nope, just a taste of New Yawk in North Dallas. See why I love deli's? The wait staff seems to have affected a New York attitude, but their bark is worse than their bite, and it's mild compared to 47th and Madison. So leave a smile and a tip and take some fresh bagels to go!
