El Centro Wednesday Luncheon

By Jim White

Timing is everything. For instance, Wednesday is the only day to get a good, inexpensive lunch in Downtown Dallas and help train the food service professionals of tomorrow.

Just stop by El Centro College and the students of The Food and Hospitality Services program will make your lunch.

Every Wednesday class members under the direction of Beth Sonnier, cook, wait tables, clean up-they switch places each week-and get practical restaurant experience.

Lunch is served from 11 until 12:30, sharp! Don’t be surprised if dessert and coffee arrive before you finish the entrée-the students have another class to attend.

The menu is different each week. It consists of soup, salad, main course and dessert. You’re asked to fill out a brief comment sheet and to score each item on a scale of one to ten.

We had a tasty Thai influenced menu that was spicy and creative. A good sweet ‘n sour soup was followed by a mango, papaya, and green bean salad that needed a little more sweetness to counteract the jalapeño and cilantro. The main course was a filling, but somewhat bland, chicken in peanut sauce over rice with delicious sugar snap peas. Dessert was a delightful carambola-star fruit-and banana combination. Fragrant iced jasmine tea accompanied our meal.

It’s an unbeatable bargain! Nine  bucks for everything. Tipping is optional, “If you feel you’ve been well served”, according to one class member.

If you’re looking for someplace different, I highly recommend El Centro’s Wednesday Luncheon. I would take any business associate here for lunch.

Is it Five Fork food and service? (That’s the rating system we use on “The KRLD Restaurant Show”.) No, just a good, well-balanced meal and everybody gets the same thing.

Who knows? Maybe some of these students will be running world class restaurants someday. This wonderful program teaches them to aim for the stars, and if you hit the moon, that ain’t so bad.
