Dakota's

Through the years I've dined at Dakota's numerous times. It's one of Dallas' most striking restaurants. The subterranean setting and waterfall patio create a memorable dining experience. I've always liked pulling up curbside and taking the elevator down for lunch or dinner. Dakota's is in the heart of the Arts District. It was one of the first American Grill Restaurants in Dallas, and it's still first rate. It's a great place to take an out of town client, especially one staying Downtown. It makes for an impressive business lunch. Combine the ambiance, food and service and your deal is practically cinched. You can eat hearty or light here. Hungry? Start off with some appetizers like Crispy Calamari Rings in a light beer batter ($5.95) or some Venison Sausage Quesadillas ($6.25). The quesadillas are great; done with Jack Cheese, ancho chiles and toasted pumpkin seed salsa. Dakota's makes some wonderful salads. I enjoy the Caesar with grilled chicken ($8.95). It's also served with crab meat for $9.95. Grilled Tuna Salad is a house specialty. It's served with soy ginger vinaigrette, papaya and fresh pineapple relish for $7.95. Order anything from the grill and you can't go wrong. You can get a Ribeye Steak ($11.95), or Atlantic Salmon ($11.50) or Rosemary Chicken Breast for $8.50. I like the grilled new potatoes served with it and the grilled vegetables with many of the dishes. Daily lunch specials are also featured. You'll find good pastas, soups and about a half dozen distinctive sandwiches. The Italian Chicken on a Kaiser roll ($7.50) is tasty and filling. Want dessert? A good Key Lime Pie is served for $4.95. And you can get an almost guilt-free "Lowfat" Mile High Mocha Pie made with yogurt. All desserts are made fresh daily in their kitchen. The wine list is fairly extensive and about 90 per cent American. Lunch is served Monday through Friday 11:00 to 2:30. Valet Parking is offered. In case you're wondering, the restaurant is named for about eight-million pounds of Dakota Mahogany Granite used throughout.
