Daddy Jack’s Wood Grill
By Jim White

We admire combinations that work. Like, love and marriage; burgers and fries; wine and cheese; Abbott and Costello; Daddy Jack’s and Deep Ellum.

Daddy Jack’s Wood Grill is just the right fit for the eclectic neighborhood.

Take the New England seafood that Jack Chaplain made famous at his Greenville Avenue location, add grilled favorites, burgers and other casual faire and you come up with Deep Ellum’s lunchtime standout.

The crowd is mostly downtown business-people, but it’s worth making this a lunch destination from anywhere.

For starters try the lobster bisque ($4 cup/$5 bowl), it’s thick and rich. The crabcake ($5) is juicy and chunky. You can get it as an entrée, too ($7).

I could add their salads to the above list of combinations that work. Dallas Mozzarella and tomato ($6), Caesar with grilled chicken ($7), and North Atlantic salmon with Dijon vinaigrette ($11) are outstanding!

The aforementioned burger is a half-pounder with grilled onions and pepper jack cheese ($5). It’s worth a try, but not so fast-when have you seen a lobster club sandwich on a menu? You’ll find it here with applewood smoked bacon ($11). Jack knows lobster.

From the main course items, I would definitely go seafood. Grilled tilapia with Cajun spice is a winner ($11). Pecan breaded rainbow trout ($7) is not to be missed.

Seafood cioppino ($9) could pass muster in San Francisco. The seafood stew is chock full of mussels, shrimp and fresh fish and steamed in a saffron tomato broth.

If you’re in the mood for pasta, the shrimp scampi with linguine, mushrooms and garlic is a hit ($8.50).

Or for straight pasta try the penne pomodoro ($7). It’s served with fresh tomatoes, roasted garlic and mozzarella.

Service is friendly and efficient. They’ll get you out on time if you’re pressed.

Note: a recent column about Bizu inadvertently referred to the “Old Bizu”. What we intended to say is that Bizu is in the old Coco Pazzo location on McKinney.
