Bangkok Inn

Dining opportunities come in all shapes and sizes. We’re not always looking for white linen and strings in the background. Sometimes there’s no “Mr. Big Shot” (or Ms.) to impress. Often the quest is for good food without regard to décor.

Here's another casual, inexpensive, unpretentious place to visit.

Translation: hole in the wall (with all due respect).

I guarantee a tidy, friendly little place in East Dallas called Bangkok Inn serves some of the best Thai food around.

Directionally challenged alert: blink and you will miss it! Get to Skillman near Live Oak and this hidden gem is up around the corner on Oram.

From the minute you walk in your olfactory sense takes over. The smells are divine and the tastes are better.

Great Chicken Satay ($5.95) here. It’s moist, tender and melt in your mouth. Another good appetizer is Corn Patties ($5.00)-good taste, with a perfect mouth feel.

For soups, go with Flaming Pot Shrimp or Chicken Soups ($10.95 for 4), if you have a group.

They also turn out a great Thai salad featuring beef, chicken or shrimp ($6.50)

Main courses? You gotta try the spicy Pad King ($6.95) with ginger, onions, bell pepper, carrots, and scallions. It comes, like most dishes here, with your choice of chicken, beef or pork. It has a tendency to vanish before your very eyes.

After Garlic and White Pepper ($7.50) you may swear you have dined and gone to heaven. The garlic sauce and crispy garlic on top is delicious.

They’re happy to regulate the heat, mild, medium or spicy. I suggest only the most experienced or intrepid Thai diners go full-tilt.

Of course, curries, noodle, fried rice dishes and vegetarian specials also abound. I love the Mus-Sa-Mun from Southern Thailand ($6.50) with potatoes and peanuts in coconut milk.

For dessert try the sticky sweet rice ($3.50).

Tip: It’s open for lunch and dinner every night Monday through Saturday. If you want wine or beer to cool the palate, it’s BYOB.
