Antoine's of Dallas
Looking for someplace quick, no nonsense, and cheap for lunch? Not in the mood
for fast-food burgers? Here's a place I love. Antoine's on Harry Hines near Oak Lawn specializes in Po-Boy Sandwiches
and imported foods; Middle Eastern delicacies, spices and condiments. It's off the beaten path and usually only
natives are aware of this funky little spot. I've been going in for almost 20 years-sometimes I've just got to
have an Antoine's "fix". Start with their "original": Ham, German Salami, Provolone Cheese,
Mayo, Chow-Chow and pickles on fresh baked bread. It's a mouth full (and a half) for $2.59. Or, you can get the
Supreme for $2.99 with double ham, if you're really hungry. They also have tuna, roast beef, pastrami, turkey and
minced ham Po-Boys in the same price range. I must admit, I love the original so much I've never even tried one
of the others. There's even a daily lunch special for $3.69-an Original, a soft drink and a big bag o' chips.
I usually "dine" at one of their "luxurious" indoor picnic
tables. Sometimes when the weather's nice, Turtle Creek beckons, so I have an outdoor picnic. I've dashed back
to the office with Po-Boy in hand, and I've "dined" in the car when I was really in a rush. Let your
time frame and circumstances guide you. You could conduct business at Antoine's. The picnic tables are perfect
for laying out blueprints or diagrams or proposals. It's not noisy so conversation is easy. I wouldn't take an
uptight client here, but I'd take one who can appreciate a good value, a great sandwich and a fun place. The atmosphere
is some faded travel posters and the aforementioned spices. It's white collar and blue collar. Some might call
Antoine's a dive, but mostly it's just a place for folks to take a lunch break.
