Angelika Café
Lights! Camera! Action! Entrées! It’s
all part of the urban dining experience at Angelika Café, in the
lobby of the new Angelika Movie Theatre in Mockingbird Station.
The plot thickens daily at this
creative restaurant serving lunch, dinner and theatre treats for
munching while the flick unfolds.
You can order a range of goodies to
take with you into the movie, or you can simply dine in this
contemporary new American restaurant whether you see a movie or not.
Another interesting variation: have lunch or dinner at Angelika, see
the film and then come back for dessert at the café. You can even
order the food to take out. And, watch a video at home while you
dine, I guess.
The food here is good. A menu of
soups, salads, sandwiches and munchies for the movie is available
from 11 a.m. until closing daily. The Theatre Treats include
assorted cheeses and crackers, fried popcorn shrimp or chicken,
chicken skewers, calamari, Swedish meatballs, crabcakes, homemade
chips, spicy fries and more, with tasty dipping sauces—beat malted
milk balls and Gummy Bears any day!
Sandwiches include real roast turkey
on toasted wheatberry bread with curried mayonnaise, sharp cheddar
and chutney—tastes great but too heavy on the chutney—along with
barbecue brisket, a big ol’ cheeseburger on a 7-grain bun, chicken
salad, griddled ham and brie on cranberry raisin and a grilled
chicken Cobb. All are served with homemade chips.
The new Autumn dinner menu is served
every night from 5:30 until 10. Try the garlic-stuffed fried olives
for a different appetizer.
Main dishes include a flavorful
sautéed chicken breast with smoked Gouda and ham on a bed of Napa
cabbage and apple with couscous timbales, plus grilled salmon and
roast pork loin, along with hearty dishes like comfort-style beef
and sausage meatloaf and braised lamb shanks.
New to the kitchen, but not new to
the area cooking scene, is executive chef Carol Key, a graduate of
the El Centro culinary program and former caterer.
She is just putting her mark on the
menu and plans to bring all the baking in-house.
Right now, service is the only
downside to this very sleek and comfortable setting. It’s earnest,
but untrained and not very knowledgeable about the kitchen’s
offerings. Chef Key is focusing her attention on this matter as well
as the menu.
We’ve also encountered some
confusion trying to get a table on the weekends when the theatre
crowd is heavy. Avoid the problems we had and make sure you have a
reservation on Friday or Saturday nights. They’re available by
calling 214-826-3300.
Angelika Café is located in
Mockingbird Station, 5321 E. Mockingbird. Valet parking and
plentiful self parking is available.
On the KRLD Restaurant Show Review Scale of one to five Forks:
Angelika rates 3 Forks.
Food is 3 and a Half Forks.
Service is 2 and a Half Forks.
Atmosphere is 3 Forks.
Price is moderate with lunch prices ranging from $6.50 to $8.50
and dinner entrées priced from $10 to $18. Theatre Treats are $4 to
$9, and they sure beat popcorn (but that’s available, too, at the
upstairs concession stand).
To borrow from another review system: Both thumbs up for Angelika
Café. It’s a good dining resource whether you’re in the mood
for a film or not.
