Steak Places We Have Known and Loved

You can’t go wrong with one of the top-flight Big Houses of Beef in The Metroplex: Del Frisco’s, Ruth’s Chris, The Cattlemen’s, Chamberlain’s or Morton’s.

Here’s one from my youth that still serves up one of the best, and tastiest, steak bargains around: Charco Broiler Steak House, 413 W. Jefferson in Oak Cliff (between Bishop and Adams), 214-942-6806. Get to Jefferson Boulevard off I-35 and head West until you see the trademark, giant Angus Steer over the doorway of Charco Broiler. It’s a cultural icon for folks who grew up in Oak Cliff. Are you ready for a top sirloin with baked potato, salad and Texas toast for $6.25? Or a 10 oz. New York Strip for $8.95? They’ve got ribeyes, chicken fried steak, a huge salad bar, sandwiches, big ol’ glasses of tea and a very loyal following. The priciest item on the menu is the 14 oz T-Bone for $10.95. I guess the prices have just about doubled since my friends and I from the Sunset High School football team used to chow down here in 1966, but that’s great considering everybody else’s prices have almost quadrupled since then. It’s a friendly little place. Check it out.

Most everyone knows that Matt's Rancho Martinez , Mi Cocina, Mia's and Joe T. Garcia turn out some darn fine Tex-Mex. What are your favorites? Let's get your suggestions and we'll pass them along, both here and in our weekly "KRLD Restaurant Show with Jim White", Sundays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on AM 1080. El Ranchito on West Jefferson in Oak Cliff and La Acapulquena on Samuell Avenue in East Dallas are two more of my favorites. What about you? Email ideas to jwdineline@aol.com Thanks!
