AN EXQUISITE DINING EXPERIENCE
Altamer, Anguilla, British West Indies

The table settings alone are truly amazing. Illuminated solar-powered table tops, handmade custom-designed silver and Murano glass dishes grace the new Altamer Restaurant, which opened last August complementing the exclusive  Altamer Villa Resort on Anguilla. Myron Goldfinger, the world renowned modern  architect, designed the building, and his wife, June, designed the interiors  and tableware. Rebecca Eggleton is the proprietor of Altamer, and she has an  interesting background, having lived in San Diego, London, Moscow, and  Istanbul, and now Anguilla. The table settings are even available for  purchase. 

Chef Maurice Leduc prepares French and Caribbean cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a beautiful oceanfront setting. Our party tried the  famous tomato tart, conch fritters deep fried in a spicy batter with  dill-caper tartar sauce, and a delicious white vichychoise. Mussels and clams  are also a speciality, steamed with white wine, garlic and herbs.

One of the specials featured a sampler of three types of fish, pistachio  coated fillet of grouper, Dover sole Meuniere, and filleted, dry pan seared  sea bass. Steamed Anguillian crayfish and local lobster split and blackened  were outstanding choices. Boned quail with Calvados, rack of New Zealand  lamb, and a Black Angus T-bone steak were also offered as entrees. A variety  of rich desserts was also available.

Service was excellent and the atmosphere is relaxed. A grand piano provides  nightly music. A 3000 bottle wine cellar which includes rare vintages allows  for wines to be paired with each course. Of special note is the private  6-seat "Chef's Table", located in the kitchen itself, for a full interactive  experience with the chef.

Entrees average about $32, and appetizers and desserts each about $12, in  line with Anguillian upscale restaurant pricing. Reservations are  recommended.
