KRLD Restaurant Show "Best New
Restaurants of 2000"
By Jim White
With fondness: Our list of the "Best New
Restaurants of 2000". Happy New Year!
Ciudad—Authentic
Mexican food with style from Joanne Bondy and Monica Greene.
Entrées shine. Pollo Verde, chicken breast in a clay pot
with masa dumplings, and chili relleno are but two examples.
These pros take their work seriously. One Turtle Creek Village—Suite
135, (214) 219-3141
Salve!—Exciting
flavors of Tuscany in a sleek, contemporary setting from Janet and
Phil Cobb. Impressive menu from Kevin Ascolese. Malfatti
alPomodoro (badly cut pasta) and John Dory filet two favorites.
2120 McKinney, (214) 220-0177.
Lola—Fine dining
and style lives on at site of former Barclays thanks to innovative
cuisine from chef Jamie Samford (formerly Angeluna in Fort Worth)
and deep pockets of car dealer Van Roberts. It’s a winning
combination! 2917 Fairmount at Cedar Springs, (214) 855-0700.
Jeroboam—Lives up
to "urban brasserie" billing. Garreth Dickey’s menu
changes daily. Caramelized onion soup is zingy-licious. Incredible
fruits de mer. 1501 Main Street, (214) 74-URBAN.
Charolais Steak House—Adding
French flair to the steak house scene. One of the best steaks I ever
had. Veal chop also divine. Pommes Frites out of this world. Great
atmosphere and service. 5950-A Royal Lane (at Preston), (214)
692-0900.
Tramontana—Preston
Center restaurant comes into its own after chef/owner James Neel
takes over in Fall ’99. Tantalizing goat cheese crusted chicken
with cherry sauce and pancetta wrapped beef tenderloin with juniper
berries and port are sure bets. 8220-B Westchester, (214) 368-4188.
El Pescador—Delightful
Mexican coastal cuisine like Huachinango al mojo de ajo—sautéed
snapper in a garlic lime cream sauce. Jorge Levy has just retained
popular chef Chris Svalesen as consultant to revamp menu. 6150
Frankford Road, (972) 267-3722.
We Oui—Phil Romano’s
French brasserie, American style. Creative chef Nick Badovinus turns
out satisfying rotisserie chicken, steak frites, duck a l’orange
and more. Menu changes seasonally. Lots of style. 100 Crescent
Court, (214) 220-3990.
Avanti Euro Bistro—Sophisticated
French/Moroccan cuisine with smooth service from Jack Ekhtiar. 5001
Addison Circle, (972) 386-7800.
Jimmy Lu’s—Asian
bistro with regional cuisine executed by Mark Miller, Stephan Pyles
protégé Glenn Terrell. Stylish design. Godzilla Calamari, Red
Devil Po-Boy, and Orange Tenderloin are highlights. 17727 Dallas
Parkway, (972) 852-8888.
Royal Spice Thai Bistro—Contemporary
gem with straightforward menu. Best choices include grilled beef
salad with lemon grass, chicken coconut soup and Pad Thai. 5004
Addison Circle, (972) 788-2223.
